History:
The VF-17 represents Tethan Aerospace Industries' one venture into the veritech market. Tethan Aerospace was formed by key high-ranking members of the Pirate Clans a few years after the end of the Eltorian War. Since its inception, Tethan Aerospace concentrated on building commercial and military capital ships. But as newer variable e-frames began to dominate the market, Tethan Aerospace began develop its own VF program. After two years of research and development, Tethan Aerospace presented the VF-17 to the Exofleet.
Codenamed the Stealth Nightmare, the VF-17 is a force to be reckoned with. Designed for reconnaissance and surgical strike missions, the Nightmare demonstrates speed and maneuverability superior to that of the VF-11 Thunderbolt (the current mainstay of the exofleet). However, the truly revolutionary part of the Nightmare's design is its on board cloaking device. With it active, the Nightmare can sneak past even the most heavily guarded area of space. However, it still possesses the same design flaw of its Pirate predecessors. It cannot fire when cloaked. But even without the cloaking shield active, the Nightmare's fighter mode cuts a low profile on most sensors with its materials and styling minimizing sensor reflection. Also, its black coloration makes it rather hard to see in the vastness of space or a night sky. These factors combine to make the Nightmare difficult to hit and extremely effective in a dogfight. Despite the Nightmare's obvious advantages, there are still relatively few in Exofleet service. This is because it was manufactured and developed by a private company using mostly non-standard parts. With replacement parts being more expensive and difficult to come by, the Nightmare is the most rare fighter in exofleet service. Therefore, only the most skilled pilots ever get to sit in its cockpit.
