HISTORY:
Every society has a bottom rung on its social ladder. The members of this class are typically the brunt of jokes, pitied, or just generally not taken seriously. In the period following the end of the Eltorian War, Neosapian/Terran hybrids became that group. The politically correct name for this group is Neo-Terran. But seeing as it could be a bit cumbersome in casual conversation, the less culturally sensitive members of society decided to shorten the name and deliver it in a spiteful manner. Hence the term "Newt" became a racial slur.
Maya is a Neo-Terran. Though born to loving parents, her Terran father and Neo mother could do little to protect Maya from the prejudice of others. The term newt was one that she heard often, and it was always in reference to her. Despite the ignorance of others, Maya did manage to grow up in a relatively normal way. Aside from the name-calling other children engaged in, she had the same opportunities as any other child. She had friends - not as many as she would have liked - but they were the kind that could be called on for help at three in the morning. After finishing school, Maya made the decision to apply to the Exofleet academy. Initially excited about her acceptance, she secretly dreaded the assignment of her academy roommate. The last thing she wanted was to spend her entire time as a cadet being called a newt by her roommate. While her roommate was not the horror Maya dreaded, she was not what Maya had expected either.
Maya was assigned to bunk with a young woman from Venus by the name of Tasha Sterling. In her, Maya would find a kindred spirit. Like Maya she was a hybrid. And like Maya, she was also dreading that her roommate was going to have issues with her parentage. The two became fast friends. Their time at the academy was a pleasant but challenging experience. When it came time to graduate they had hoped to be assigned together. Alas, that was not to be the case. For while Maya was selected to be a member of Admiral Takagi's elite exosquad, Tasha was stationed at a deep space outpost. The two continue to stay in touch and hope that their paths will soon cross again. A reality that will come to pass faster than either had anticipated.
