HISTORY:
If the path of one's life can be said to follow one of two courses, and one of those courses is that of active determination while the other is passive reaction, then Alex Camden is the poster child for the latter. He is not the sort to force destiny to bend to his will, he is the type that floats in its wake. Not because he is weak-willed or incompetent. No, it is simply because it would take him away from his machines. Alex Camden loves his machines. What most people fail to realize is that his love of machines is due to the fact that they have been better to him in life than people.

Alex grew up as an orphan on Earth. He never knew his parents and grew up in an orphanage with no children his own age. Because he had no one to relate to, he took to tinkering with machinery in his spare time. It soon became apparent that Alex had a natural aptitude for the work. Equipment that had been broken for years suddenly became repaired. Older obsolete computers were rebuilt into faster more contemporary versions. All of his work was top notch and all of his work was done using components from a nearby junkyard. By the age of twelve, he was the chief maintenance engineer for the entire orphanage. Despite his technical growth, Alex's social graces were less than stellar. While not rude or ignorant, his inquisitive nature usually dominated any conversation he held so that the listener was bombarded with one question after another. This typically had the effect of driving the listener away.

Even though Alex was a kind and gentle boy he would not be adopted. He finished his teenage years working at the very orphanage in which he was raised. His decision to join the Exofleet was purely a technical one. After seeing Veritech Fighters for the first time during an air show he could not get to an Exofleet recruiter fast enough.

With his acceptance to Exofleet academy, Alex soon discovered that his hand-eye coordination translated very well to piloting. No one was more stunned than his instructors. Prior to his first time in the simulator, many of his teachers worried about his capacity to actually pilot a VF. While his grades were impressive, it was noted that he seemed distracted all the time and absent minded. Two qualities that traditionally get pilots killed. For reasons that they are still at loss to explain, Alex Camden's maiden flight in the simulator was flawless. Even more stunning than that was the fact his first training flight was equally flawless. And if that was not impressive enough, some of the modifications he made to his training VF were adopted by Exofleet and made standard for many VF designs.

After graduation Alex was supposed to be assigned to a squad as an Exotechnologist. However, circumstances at the time were such that the fleet was attempting to implement a number of new ship designs. As there were some unforeseen issues with these new designs, a number of promising exotechnologists were assigned to assist. Alex was one of them. Consequently he was transferred to several different postings until finally being assigned to aid in the construction of the fleet's new flagship, the Resolute III. Even though he was not assigned to a specific squad, Alex did manage to gain some combat experience during this time. It was while working on the Resolute that Alex's work gained the attention of its future commander - Admiral Takagi. It would be shortly thereafter that Alex Camden was added to a short list of candidates for a new elite squad the Admiral was putting together.
