The goal of the EDP was to diversify the military and familiarize terran soldiers with alien cultures. It also allowed various aliens to see the Sol system with time served counting towards their term of service for their native military. The EDP also arranges for terrans to serve within participating Extraterrestrial Militaries. This was, of course, the way that Jaden heard about the program to begin with. Intrigued by terran culture, Jaden put in an application with the hope of serving as an executive officer. However due to cultural differences, it was decided that Jaden should serve as a non-commissioned officer.     Virgothans are unique among alien species in that they do not have a concept of gender. The reason for this is that Virgothans reproduce asexually - meaning that there are no true males or females because all Virgothans are hermaphrodites. Typically, Virgothans do not live with other members of their species save for their direct progeny. While families exist, they are considered loose associations used more for tracking of specific detrimental genes than anything else. As a result, alien cultures (like that of the terrans) present a bit of a problem for Virgothans. They most often fail to understand the concept of family and the complex social arrangements that accompany dating, marriage, and child rearing.     Physically speaking, a Virgothan's appearance conforms to what most species would call female. Their reproductive organs are internalized and due to their biology Virgothans are subject to the possibility of pregnancy at any time. It is standard practice that upon entering military service they are required to take hormonal contraception to prevent such an occurrence.     Since Jaden's arrival on the Resolute III, it has become fascinated with the concept of gender. In part this is due to Jaden's natural curiosity, but Jaden's interest is also self-serving - as it realizes it's failure to understand terran culture is most directly linked to understanding the concept of gender. Another reason for Jaden's sudden interest is the reaction it elicits from other species. For while Virgothan's do not understand the subtleties of relationships between genders, they are often found appealing by males of other species - leading to advances they do not understand.
